Puggle breed description

Puggle (pigle, mogl) is a decorative hybrid breed, the result of mating a pug and a beagle. Such a strange name is formed from the combination of the abbreviated names of the parent breeds. Puggles are sometimes called “miniature mastiffs” due to their external resemblance.

History of the Puggle breed

A Wisconsin breeder named Walls Havens began breeding puggles in 1990. He also coined the name “puggle” and was one of the first to formally register the breed with the American Kennel Club for hybrid dog breeds. Although Havens was the first to officially breed dogs of this breed, the beginning of puggley breeding dates back to the 1980s, when American breeders experimented with creating new dog breeds. In 2000, the puggles were sold to commercial pet owners.
Later, Havens came under fire from inspections and checks. Havens’ work was temporarily suspended by the American Kennel Club due to refusals for ten years from kennel inspections, and in 2008 his work was closed by the Humane Society of Wisconsin. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has repeatedly stated that this nursery lacks good animal care.
Critics believe that breeders, seeking to develop a new “designer” breed, are doing so to the detriment of the physical health of future generations of dogs.

Puggle character and temperament

From the pug, the puggle inherited sociability and good nature. It can become a companion for both a single person and a family with children. Pugl is good with kids and gets along with schoolchildren.
The beagle hunter gave Paglyu endurance and activity. Despite its small size, the dog is able to play and walk for a long time. This dog is not very suitable for joint jogging, but it is an excellent companion for walking.

From both parents, Puggle received stubbornness and independence. He understands everything, but he may simply not want to execute the command. So the owner must stock up on patience and goodies. Your pet responds best to positive reinforcement in the form of food and praise. The sociable puggle quickly finds a common language with both animals and people. He is not aggressive and is able to compromise. By the way, these dogs make good guards. They are happy to notify the owner of the guest when he rings the doorbell. However, having a friendly nature, the puggle is unlikely to be able to protect himself or his family.

However, not everything is so rosy in the upbringing of representatives of this breed. Like the beagle, the puggle is very curious, so during a walk, its owner should be careful, letting go of the pet from the leash. A squirrel, cat or something else can capture his attention so much that the pet can easily get lost.

The short, thick puggle coat requires regular brushing with a stiff brush. It is necessary to devote at least 5-10 minutes a day to this process. Animals are bathed infrequently, once a month will be enough. Particular attention should be paid to the

puggle cleanliness of the dog’s skin folds and eyes. With insufficient care, infectious diseases can develop in them.
Puggle inherited a number of genetic diseases from his ancestors: dysplasia of the hip joint, breathing problems, which depend on the degree of flattening of the muzzle, and eye diseases.

Puggle’s conditions of detention

Puggle is a compact dog that will become a devoted urban companion. He feels comfortable in a city apartment, provided there are enough walks. You should walk with this mobile dog two to three times a day. It is very important to exhaust the dog – for him it will be a real canine happiness.
