Parfor – The Strict Collar How To Use Responsibly
Collar – a product in the form of a ring made of leather, fabric, metal, plastic and worn around the neck of an animal to restrict mobility, identify or decorate. To restrict movement, a leash or chain can be attached to the collar. The collar is an evidence that the dog has a home. An address tag (iron plate) can be attached to the collar, indicating the owner’s address and telephone number.
To foster obedience in dogs, a strict collar (parfors) or a choke collar is used. And it can only be used in exceptional cases. Straight collars are designed, as a rule, for large breeds of dogs.It can only be used in working with large pets, which sometimes simply cannot be influenced by other methods: reward and lighter punishment.
Do not wear parfors on small dogs and puppies!
Most strict collars fit and unfasten by squeezing any of the collar links. But there are also collars on which a special split mechanism is provided, most often it is located on a chain, but it can be realized in another way.
Such a strict collar works in the same way as a regular collar, but it is much more convenient for beginners and for women. It does not require effort to remove the collar – you just need to snap off the clasp. People who use collars without such a clasp tend to remove the collar over the dog’s head instead of separating the links, which is not good for the dog.
Parfor (the correct name of the strict collar) is used by dog handlers on training grounds when teaching a dog the command “Near”. Working out this element lasts in more than 20 minutes, then the dog is given a rest. That is, for the whole day, the pet wears this collar for 15-20 minutes, receiving a reward for this. At the same time, corrective jerks are not often given to the dog, especially if the dog is already well trained.
Also, parfor is classified by weight:
Choose the size carefully, extra links can be removed from each collar, but if it is initially too large, and your pet has a thin neck, then when adjusting the size, only 2-3 links may remain. You need to know about wearing this collar – the correct position on the neck. The collar should be fastened just behind the ears, where the neck begins. Sits tightly, does not move out. You can hardly put one finger under the collar. For smooth-haired breeds, the model is purchased with flat spikes. In order not to injure the skin, there are options with rubber pads on the spikes. Choose the size carefully, extra links can be removed from each collar, but if it is initially too large, and your pet has a thin neck, then when adjusting the size, only 2-3 links may remain.
Therefore, according to experts, the use of parfors is permissible only under the supervision of an experienced dog handler, which will minimize the risk of harm to the dog and make its use as effective as possible.
