The Belgian Shepherd Dog is a national treasure of Belgium. The founder of the breed is a professor of veterinary medicine, Belgian Adolf Riyul. It was this person who developed the breed standard and highlighted the main characteristics.

Riyul began working on the formation of the breed in 1891. In the course of development, dogs of the same type with erect ears, of medium size, were used. The color of these dogs is different, as is the structure of the coat. As a result, four species were identified with a common standard and different coats.
